Pleasant Grove plays Nevada Community Saturday at 3 p.m. in The Star at Frisco, Texas. The winner advances to the Region II-4A Division II quarterfinals.

GLADEWATER, Texas – Pleasant Grove found itself in an unexpected shootout with Bullard Thursday night at Jack V. Murphy Stadium.

The Hawks were nursing a 28-21 lead in the third quarter, but the defending 4A Division II state champions scored the game’s final 27 points to rout the Panthers, 55-21. Pleasant Grove improved to 8-3 in winning its fifth straight bi-district championship.

“This sort of reminded me of 2017 when everyone in the playoffs gave us their best shot,” said winning coach Josh Gibson. “Bullard has a good football team.

“I felt like we played well in the first half. We scored on like four of five possessions. After starting slow in the second half we got it going again. Our defense played well overall. We forced a lot of turnovers. It was a little frustrating that we had a couple of turnovers.”

Hawks had too many weapons in shootout

Logan Johnson and freshman Jaylen Boardley ignited the Hawks’ wing-t offense. Johnson led all runners with 148 yards, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He also caught two passes for 102 yards. Boardley scored once, while running for 111 yards on 15 carries.

The Hawks’ bonus in the shootout came in the form of junior quarterback Jalen Woodside, who completed 6 of 12 passes for 181 yards. He threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Sam Bradshaw for the game’s first points. Woodside also ignited PG’s second half run with a 2-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Pleasant Grove finished with 549 total yards to Bullard’s 346.

Bullard quarterback Blake Blain shocked the Hawks early, which included 12 and 25-yard touchdown passes to Luke Williams and Case Bowman, respectively. Blain would finish 17 of 29 for 278 yards.

Touchdown runs by Hayden Koller, Boardley and Nick Martin had Pleasant Grove on top 28-14 at halftime.

The Panthers stole the momentum early in the third quarter by stopping the Hawks, and scoring on a 1-yard plunge by Williams with 9:41 left in the period.

Woodside scored with 3:58 left in that quarter, and Koller scored again as PG started pulling away. Johnson and R.J. Collins scored the Hawks’ final two touchdowns.

The Hawks play Friday’s winner between Glen Rose and Nevada Community next week in the area round.
