ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has acquired minor league outfielder Carl Chester from the Tampa Bay Rays as the player to be named later in completing a December 10 trade between the two clubs.

In the December 10 trade, the Rangers acquired first basemen Nate Lowe and Jake Guenther, along with a player to be named later, in exchange for infielder Osleivis Basabe, catcher/outfielder Heriberto Hernandez and outfielder Alexander Ovalles.

Chester, 25, has spent his entire professional career in the Tampa Bay system since being selected by the Rays in 12th round of the 2017 June draft from the University of Miami.  He was not added to the Rays Alternate Site roster or fall instructional league roster at any point in 2020, as his last game action came in 2019, when he combined to bat .257 with 6 home runs and 46 RBI over 119 games with Charlotte (High-A) and Montgomery (AA).  He has also appeared in Spring Training games for the Rays in each of the last three years.  For his three pro seasons, Chester has a .284/.340/.397/.737 slash line over 306 games.

Chester, who is not a 40-man roster player, has been assigned to the organization’s Double-A roster.

RANGERS SIGN RHP DREW ANDERSON TO MINORS DEAL: Texas has signed right-handed pitcher Drew Anderson to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.  The 26-year-old made one appearance for the White Sox last season during his lone MLB stint on August 8.  He was designated for assignment on August 9, assigned outright to the Alternate Training Site on August 11, and released on September 3.  He has also made 3 appearances for the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League this winter, posting 5.0 scoreless innings with no walks and 10 strikeouts.  Primarily a starter in his minor league career, Anderson has totaled 10 games/one start over Major League action spanning each of the last four seasons with Philadelphia (2017-19) and Chicago-AL (2020).  The Nevada native was originally selected by the Phillies in the 21st round of the 2012 June draft.
