The Paris Lady Wildcats Basketball team capped off their district opener at Pleasant Grove with a 61-44 point win. Jeff Chapman, their former head coach would have been proud.
Chapman died after a battle with cancer the weekend before last. Pleasant Grove’s girls varsity players presented the Paris Lady Cats team with a card and flowers before the game at Hawks gym to let their opponent know that they were sorry for their loss.
Paris’ interim head coach is Hiyadeja Moore. Moore has had more setbacks than the loss of the teams head coach in recent months. Her father passed away from COVID-19 this past summer and she also battled the virus with complications that led to pneumonia.
Hawks and Paris were tied at the end of 1st quarter
The first quarter ended with both teams only able to generate 13 points. However, the Lady Wildcats rallied in the second quarter and took a 38-16 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Pleasant Grove Lady Hawks coached by Marsha Cowling have improved throughout the pre-district schedule. The Lady Hawks responded and played well in the second half, never giving up. However, in the end; The Lady Wildcats won the game, perhaps for their late coach.
Paris was led by Quinaya Savage who scored 19 points. Jazz Dangerfield pitched in with 17 points and Asia Johnson poured in ten.
The Pleasant Grove Lady Hawks were led by Emma Henard who scored 12 points. Addi Koller ptiched in with nine.
Pleasant Grove will play their second district game Friday night at home against Pittsburg. The game will be broadcasted live on 94.1 FM ESPN-Texarkana.
