HAWKINS, Texas – A showdown between two unbeaten teams, Texas A&M University-Texarkana and LSU-Shreveport, is scheduled Thursday (Feb. 4) in Shreveport.
Sophomore transfer Jonathan Bentley scored the decisive points with three seconds left on two free throws Saturday at Jarvis Christian University. Bentley’s charity shots made it 62-58, and Jacob Brown’s long 3-pointer at the buzzer just made the final score closer at 62-61.
Unbeaten teams duel in showdown
The 19th-ranked Eagles improve to 9-0 on the season, and leads the Red River Athletic Conference with a 4-0 mark. LSU-Shreveport (11-0, 2-0) is ranked second in the nation.
Texarkana dominated the first half. The Eagles led by 16 before settling for a 35-21 lead at intermission. The Bulldogs started the second half hot, cutting their deficit to 35-27. It wouldn’t get closer until the final minutes of the game.
Pleasant Grove product Connor Ouellette converted his only two 3-pointers and led the Eagles with 14 points. Kobe Powell added 13 points, while Davonte Craven contributed 7 points and 9 rebounds for unbeaten TAMU-T.
Both teams were cold from the field. TAMU-T shot 41 percent overall and 38 percent on 21 three-point attempts. Jarvis Christian (2-5, 2-3) was 23 of 67 overall, and only 6 of 29 on its 3-pointers. The Bulldogs took 21 more shots from the field.
Christian Bennings led the Bulldogs with 13 points. Jacob Brown added 11 points, while Semaj Matthews contributed 9 points and 12 rebounds.
