Texas A&M University-Texarkana lost two heart-breakers in its season softball openers Friday at Bramlett Field. Xavier, La., rallied to beat the Eagles, 6-4. Lyon College won the nightcap in eight innings, 5-4.
The Eagles led 3-0 and 4-1 in the opener. Xavier scored two runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh for the win. Destyn Jones scored the decisive run and was the winning pitcher in relief.
Erika Richardson hit a two-run homer for Texarkana, with Alicia Mora contributing two singles. Sierrah Kupihea was the losing pitcher in relief. The Eagles’ two pitchers walked 10 batters, and their teammates committed seven errors.
Xavier rallies from 4-1 deficit
Texarkana led 2-0 early, and was still ahead 4-3 going to the seventh inning. Lyon College scored one in the seventh to forced extra innings, and won the game in the eighth. Addison Harmon and Faith Commesser had two hits each for the winners.
Jade Martin led the Eagles at the plate with three hits. Jordyn Logan added two hits. Katelyn Slamer drove in two runs with a triple. Richardson also had a double. Anna Westbury was the losing pitcher in relief.
The three teams play another doubleheader Saturday at Bramlett.
