Second-ranked LSU-Shreveport never trailed Monday night at the Patterson Student Center, and swept its regular season series with Texas A&M-Texarkana, 78-67.
The Pilots scored the game’s first four points. They led by as many as 21 in the first half. Akeem White’s basket with 6:17 left put the Louisiana club on top, 35-12.
Texas A&M-Texarkana rallied in those final six minutes to make it 39-26 at intermission.
The 20th-ranked Eagles rallied in the second half. They pulled even (57-57) with 7:16 left on a free throw by Greg Holloway. Ike Durham scored to tie the game at 59-59.
Pilots pull away late to sweep series
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jeff Boyd and Kadavion Evans followed and LSU-Shreveport (14-1, 6-1) was on its way to another Red River Athletic Conference championship. The Pilots’ outside shooting was a key factor to the outcome. They converted 14 of 33 treys, compared to six 3-pointers by the Eagles.
Leondre Washington led the winners with 22 points, 14 coming in the first half. Boyd was the Pilots’ go-to guy the final 20 minutes. He scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half.
Texarkana was ice-cold in the first half. Kobe Powell did not score in the first 20 minutes. The Eagles came out hot in the final half. Connor Ouellette finished with a team-high 13 points. Davonte Craven played well inside and scored 12 points. Marquis Waller contributed 11 points, and Durham scored 10. Holloway pulled down a game-high 6 rebounds, but Shreveport won the battle on the glass, 35-31.
The Eagles slipped to third place in the RRAC with the loss. They can reclaim second by sweeping its series with LSU-Alexandria Tuesday at the Patterson Student Center. The RRAC tournament is schedule next week
