ARLINGTON, Texas — No. 9 Texas Baseball lost 8-1 to No. 6 Ole Miss in the finale of the State Farm College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field on Monday.
The Longhorns (0-3) will turn their attention to opening the home slate at UFCU Disch-Falk Field with a four-game series against BYU that gets started on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Kolby Kubichek pitched five innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Kubichek struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk in his first start of the season. Reliever Justin Eckhardt pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout in his first outing of the year.
Ole Miss snagged an early lead after starting the game with a double down the left field line. The runner moved over to third base and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Cam Williams tied the game up, 1-1, with a solo homer to deep right field in the bottom of the fifth inning. The homer was the second of his Texas career after hitting a walk-off homer last season.
Ole Miss quickly retook the lead in the sixth with four runs off of a pair of relievers, Lucas Gordon and Drew Shifflet, to make the score 5-1.
Mike Antico started the eighth inning with a double for his first hit as a Longhorn but he was left stranded to end the inning.
The Rebels added three more runs in the top of the ninth inning off of Coy Cobb to make it 8-1.
