AUSTIN, Texas — Mike Antico hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give No. 19 Texas Baseball a 3-1 win over BYU in the home opener at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (1-3) and Cougars (2-3) will square off again on Thursday at 1 p.m. The game time was moved up from the originally scheduled 6:30 p.m. start due to expected weather.
Cole Quintanilla picked up his first win of the season, pitching two innings and allowing just one run on two hits. Freshman Tanner Witt recorded his first career save, pitching a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
Cam Williams blasted the Longhorns into the lead in the bottom of the third inning with a solo smash off the batter’s eye in straight-away center field. The homer was the second of the season for Williams. He finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and a homer.
The Cougars knotted the game up, 1-1, in the eighth with a solo homer off of Quintanilla.
Texas then mounted a rally in the eighth, with Williams getting things started with a double. After a walk by Murphy Stehly, Williams was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a passed ball. Douglas Hodo III also walked to put two runners on before a wild pitch moved them into scoring position.
Pete Hansen started and pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Drew Shifflet came on in relief and pitched three more shutout innings with three strikeouts. Quintanilla and Witt combined for the final three innings.
