The Pleasant Grove Hawks won both games at the Springhill baseball tournament in Longview, Tx., Friday.
Pleasant Grove beat Wills Point 6-0 in a time shortened game. The Hawks beat Carthage in walk of fashion 4-3 in a 7 inning night cap. Pleasant Grove is 3-0 at the tournament and on a 4-game winning streak.
Hawks starting pitcher Coe Blain was dominating in the win over Wills Point. Blain pitched 4 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 hits, striking out 8 and walking two. Blain earned the win. Carson Rhodes came in and pitched the last 2/3’s of the 4th inning striking out 1 and allowing 1 hit.

Hawks batters pounded 9 hits in 4 and a half innings. Brendon Clark was 1-for-1, Brock Bearden was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Alex Murphy was 1-for one. Alex Galvan was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Travler Couch was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Josh Brown was 1-for-two. Hayden Koller was 1-for-three.
Pleasant Grove downed Carthage with a walk off RBI bunt by JM Long in the bottom of the 7th in game 2.. The Hawks (6-2) had runners on first and second with nobody out. Long bunted the ball and beat the throw at first colliding with the Bulldogs first baseman. Brenton Clark scored from 2nd base and the Hawks emptied the dugout with a celebration at home plate.
Hawks batters managed to get 7 hits against stingy Carthage pitching. Brock Bearden was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Brenton Clarke was 1-for-2, JM Long was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Tucker Anderson was 2-for-three. Alex Galvan had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Travler Couch was 1-for-two.
Blake Jennings was dominating on the mound in the Hawks win over Carthage in game two. Jennings entered the game 2 outs in the bottom of the second in relief of starter JM Long. Jennings allowed only 1 hit in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight.
Hawks head coach Riley Fincher was thrilled with his pitching in both games Friday
“We got two outstanding pitching performances today from Coe Blain in game 1 and Blake Jennings in relief in game 2,” Fincher said. “Jennings came in a bases loaded situation in the 3rd inning and struck out their best hitter. After that, he completely controlled the game. It was awesome to see him compete like that.”
Coach Fincher said Blain dominated in game one.
“To see Blain dominate for 4.1 innings was great for our team.” Fincher said” “Offensively, we have a team full of selfless individuals who will do whatever it takes to help their team win. I thought our defense made huge plays in key situations. Our team is continuing to come together and I think rhat was very evident in tonight’s game.”
Pleasant Grove will attempt to extend their 4-game winning streak this afternoon (Saturday) at the Springhill tournament. Pleasant Grove will play Marshall at 2:40 p.m. The Hawks vs Marshall game will be broadcasted live on 94.1 FM ESPN-Texarkana.
