The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have agreed to a contract extension, avoiding a second year of playing under the franchise tag.

“His evolving into an NFL quarterback has been nothing short of perfect picture,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 “The Fan” on Jan. 5. “He has great ability in my mind to win games. He’s talented. He certainly has experience. And, so, he has all the things as substantiated by what we’ve offered Dak. You wouldn’t be offering Dak what’s being offered in the past if you not thought he was very special. The issue is how do you come together and that’s no stranger to me. I’ve been doing it my whole life. I got here putting things together, and we got to get it together.”
Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman has gone on record that he wouldn’t hesitate to pay the former 2016 fourth-round pick from Mississippi State.
“They’re the CEOs of your franchise,” Aikman told “The Fan” on Dec. 30, 2020. “They have to be the ones who really establish the culture and the accountability within the football team. And if you don’t have the right guy in that role, then I think you’re really going to struggle as an organization. And Dak checks every box in my opinion. And, so, that’s why I’ve said for the last couple of years that I wouldn’t hesitate at all to pay him.”
The Cowboys have paid Prescott, who will earn $40 million annually.
