The Pleasant Grove Hawks baseball team took over sole possession of second place in district Friday with a 6-3 win on the road at Gilmer.
The games didn’t start until 8:10 p.m. because of an issue with the umpires. However, when the game began, the Hawks exploded and Gilmer self destructed.
The Hawks scored 5 runs in the top of the first inning with two hits and 3 Gilmer errors. PG never looked back.
The Hawks starting pitcher Blake Jennings earned the win. Jennings (2-1) pitched 4 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs on only 3 hits, striking out 4 and walking four. Nathan Hutcheson pitched the final 2 and 1/3 innings not allowing any runs on just 1 hit while striking out four.
Pleasant Grove (14-4, 4-1) was led at the plate by Cason Head who was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Brenton Clark, Hayden Koller and Tucker Anderson were each 1-for-3 and JM Long was 1-for-four.
Hawks head coach Riley Fincher said it was a big win on the road.
“Our guys did a great job of handling the delay,” Coach Fincher said. “Blake Jennings and Nathan Hutcheson pitched great and our guys squared a lot of balls up at the plate.” Fincher said the support from the Hawk fans that traveled to Gilmer was awesome, as always.
Pleasant Grove’s next game is Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Pittsburg. The Pittsburg Pirates are 0-4 in district. They lost each game by only 1 run. The Hawks beat Pittsburg earlier this season in 11 innings at Pittsburg. The Pleasant Grove at Pittsburg will be broadcasted live on 94.1 FM ESPN-Texarkana and on line at ESPNTexarkana.com.
