The Rangers wrapped up their 2021 Spring Training slate with a 6-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday afternoon in Arlington. Texas finishes with a 14-12-3 (.538) record in Cactus League play this spring after dropping each of the last 2 exhibition contests against the Brewers at Globe Life Field.
In his final tune up start before the regular season, Mike Foltynewicz (L, 4.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R-ER) fanned a spring-high 6 batters and induced 9 swing-and-miss strikes. After allowing one run on one hit through the first 2 frames, the right-hander was tagged for 5 hits as part of a 5-run 3rd inning for Milwaukee, including a two-run home run by Kolten Wong. Wes Benjamin (2.0 SHO IP) retired 6 of 7 batters faced in relief, recording a trio of strikeouts to bring his final spring whiff total to 14.
The Rangers jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first inning courtesy of an RBI groundout by Nate Lowe (2-for-3) and run-scoring single from Nick Solak. In the 8th, Andy Ibáñez cut a 4-run deficit to 3 with an opposite-field solo home run that narrowly cleared the wall in right field. The blast was the first of the exhibition season for Ibáñez, and the lone extra-base hit by a Texas batter in today’s contest.
Following an off day tomorrow, the Rangers will open the 2021 regular season on Thursday in Kansas City as part of a 3-game set with the Royals. RHP Kyle Gibson is scheduled to make his first career Opening Day start against Kansas City RHP Brad Keller. That game will be televised on Bally Sports Southwest.
