AUSTIN, Texas — Ivan Melendez and Cam Williams each homered for the second-straight game, as No. 4 Texas Baseball topped Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 14-4, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.
Melendez went 4-for-5 for a home run, a double and three RBI to lead the Longhorn offense. Texas (21-5) combined to draw a season-high-tying 11 walks, with Williams and Zach Zubia collecting three each. Mitchell Daly, Douglas Hodo III and Trey Faltine each had two-hits nights, while Daly and Faltine knocked in four and three runs, respectively.
Palmer Wenzel picked up the win in relief, moving to 3-0 on the year after pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his 12th relief appearance of the season.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (6-21) got the scoring started in the first, opening the game with back-to-back singles and a fielder’s choice to bring a run across and take a quick 1-0 lead.
Texas took the lead in the second, scoring three runs courtesy of a home run and a pair of walks. Williams led off the frame with a walk and scored on a home run to left field by Melendez. Mike Antico reached on a one-out walk, stole second and advanced to third when the throw from the catcher traveled into center field. Faltine drove in the third run on an RBI groundout.
The Islanders answered with a run in the third on a double and a base hit to close the gap to 3-2.
Another run for Texas in the fourth extended the lead to 4-2. With two outs, Antico was hit by a pitch and Faltine followed with an infield single. After a pitching change, Eric Kennedy drilled a single through the left side to score Antico.
Texas added two more runs in the fifth to make it 6-2 after Zubia reached on an error and Williams belted his team-leading eighth home run of the season to deep right-center.
A two-run home run for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in the sixth brought the Islanders back within two, 6-4.
The Longhorns added three insurance runs in the seventh to push the lead to 9-4. Williams walked to open the frame and Melendez smoked a ball down the left-field line to drive in the run from first. Hodo followed with a single and Faltine was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A fielder’s choice erased Melendez from the basepaths but kept the bases full. Daly hit a ball that struck the pitcher’s foot and traveled into short-right-center, allowing Hodo and Faltine to score.
Texas put the game out of reach in the eighth, tacking on five more runs to take a 14-4 lead. The Longhorns loaded the bases on back-to-back walks by DJ Petrinsky and Williams and a Melendez base hit. Hodo singled to center to drive in a run, then Faltine singled to left to plate two more. Dylan Campbell walked to reload the bases and Daly singled to left to score the final two runs.
Justin Eckhardt drew the start, collecting two strikeouts while surrendering four hits and a pair of runs in 2 2/3 innings. Lucas Gordon struck out two and allowed two runs in an inning of work. Cole Quintanilla pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, while Drew Shifflet entered in the ninth to close out the game.
The Longhorns will be back in action at UFCU Disch-Falk Field tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. for a matchup with Stephen F. Austin.
