No. 3 Texas

By Ryan Tewes

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 4 Texas Baseball scored eight runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 9-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Wednesday night. Texas (22-8) has won five consecutive games and 22 of the last 27.

Ivan Melendez and Zach Zubia each went 2-for-3 with a home run to pace the Longhorn offense, while Pete Hansen (3-1) pitched six shutout innings, striking out three and allowing two hits to earn the win.

Texas got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the first. Eric Kennedy led off with a bunt single down the first-base line and moved to second on his 13th stolen base of the season. Zach Zubia and Silas Ardoin followed with back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to center by Cam Williams brought Kennedy home, then Ivan Melendez lined a ball to center to score Zubia from second.

The Longhorns added two more runs in the second to increase the lead to 4-0. Trey Faltine and Mitchell Daly each drew walks to put two on for Zubia with two outs. Zubia doubled through the middle to score Faltine and was followed by Daly, who scored courtesy of an errant throw into the Lumberjacks dugout.

A pair of Texas home runs brought another four runs across in the fourth. With two outs, Zubia drove a ball into the Texas bullpen in right field for his fourth home run of the season. Ardoin and Williams each walked and were brought home on Melendez’s fourth home run of the season.

Stephen F. Austin (12-14) opened the eighth with three-straight base hits to plate a run and cut the lead to 8-1.

Texas got the run back in the bottom of the inning on DJ Petrinsky’s first home run of the season.

Jared Southard pitched a scoreless seventh with a strikeout and Sam Walbridge struck out three batters in a scoreless ninth.

Texas drew a season-high 12 walks with Ardoin walking a career-best four times. Texas’ first eight runs scored with two outs.

Texas will be back at UFCU Disch-Falk Field this weekend for a three-game Big 12 Conference series with Kansas State. The series will get underway on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
