Liberty-Eylau girls celebrate on the medal stand after winning the 4 x 100 relay in Thursday night's District 15-4A Track meet at Harris Field.

TEXARKANA, Texas – Imagine Tiger Woods missing a two-foot putt to lose the Masters. That’s probably how Liberty-Eylau senior Tavieon Neal felt Thursday at the District 15-4A Track & Field Championships after flinching in the blocks and getting disqualified from the 100 meters.

Neal was not only favored to win that event, but possibly a state championship. Only three events earlier Neal raced from third place to first in the 4 x 100 relay. He did win the gold medal in the 200. Don’t be surprised if Neal competes at next week’s Area meet in the 4 x 200. L-E won that event Thursday in 1:30.94 without him.

Gilmer used the Leopards’ misfortune. The Buckeyes’ Davion Smith won the 100 in a wind-aided 10.26, and Gilmer took home the championship trophy with 150 points. L-E was second at 139, with Paris one point back, and Pittsburg fourth with 104. Pleasant Grove was fifth with 59.

L-E boys perform well in field events

Liberty-Eylau got off to a good start in the field events. Nathanial Gamble won the discus (125-2), with teammate Oren Gaar third (122-4). The Leopard won more gold when Jeavon Stewart prevailed in the triple jump (39-6 1/2). Pleasant Grove’s Ben Bricker won the high jump by clearing six feet.

Stewart finished the day with four gold medals. He was on the winning 4 x 100, and also won both hurdle races.

The Lady Leopards also started well in the field events with three gold medal performances. Tamara Norris won both the long jump (17-0 1/2) and the triple jump (37-9). Ja’Quoye Williams won the shot put with a throw of 34-7.

L-E’s girls added four more wins in the running events to win the team title with 172 points. Gilmer was close behind at 164, while Pleasant Grove was sixth.

The Leopards won the 4 x 100 easily in 48.82. Chelsea Simmons, La’Qukeisha Jefferson, Indiyah Aldridge and Nevaeh Hill made up the winning team. Freshman McKenzie Kvarda won the 800 in 2:30.37. Jefferson captured gold in the 100 (12.04).

Pleasant Grove’s Emma Henard won the 1600 (5:53.17) after placing second in the 3200.
