TEXARKANA — Liberty-Eylau has hired Regina Estrada as their new volleyball coach.
Estrada will take over as the Lady Leopards’ volleyball coach, her first year as a head coach.
“I’m excited for the opportunity,” Estrada said. “I got to work with the girls a little bit and I’m ready to get the season going. I think the community here is really strong and that directly affects your athletes. Once you have a solid foundation, the win and loss columns will take care of themselves.”
Estrada, a Flatonia, Texas, native, attended Austin Community College, University of Incarnate Word, and completed her degree at Texas A&M-Texarkana, where she made the decision to switch education.
“After graduation, I moved back home to take an assistant volleyball position,” said Estrada. “The coaches there are great and I was able to learn a lot. Once I was presented with this opportunity, I couldn’t pass it down. I have a chance to better myself, while also ascending in the profession. I am excited to step out of my comfort zone and try some things for myself.”
Estrada begins work with the Lady Leopards on Aug. 2 as they prep for a non-district schedule.
“I’m looking to continuously build everyday,” Estrada said. “As long as we get back to the basics, we’ll be alright. I’m inheriting a talented team with some skill.”
According to Estrada, building a sense of family will be “critical” in the first few weeks with her team.
Said Estrada: “If we can get some sort of community in the first four days, I think we’ll be all right.”
