ATLANTA, Texas – Rumor has it that Ben Scharnberg just appeared one day near Stonehenge II in Ingram, Texas. Consequently, you might call him an “Outlander.”

That’s just folklore guys, but the 69-year-old Scharnberg is definitely “old school” when it comes to coaching high school sports. He plants the values his parents taught him. That is perhaps the biggest reason he’s being inducted into the Fox Sports Texarkana Hall of Fame.

Ben Scharnberg graduated from Kerrville Tivy High School, where he was a multi-sport star. He continued his football career at nearby Southwest Texas State University (new Texas State), and played for the San Antonio Toros semi-pro team in the summer.

Coaching jobs at Carrizo Springs, Dumas, Houston Channelview, Kingwood-Humble, Galena Park and Boling led Scharnberg to Atlanta. He was Athletic Director and head football coach for 19 years (1988-2007), and compiled a 149-82-2 record. The Rabbits went 12-4 in 2003 and won the 3A Division II State Championship in football. Scharnberg had 14 winning seasons in Atlanta.

Ben also won big when he married Janna

Scharnberg married (Janna) in 1980, and they have two children (Stewart and Sarah).

His football teams always considered Liberty-Eylau a big rival, which motivated the Rabbs to wins over L-E in 1999 and 2006. However, the Leopards won state championships both years.

Atlanta won several state championships in track and field during Scharnberg’s reign as AD. The Rabbs won a state title in baseball, and was always a strong challenge in the girls’ sports.

Others have already recognized Ben’s achievements in the classroom and sports. Two years ago the East Texas Coaches Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame at Texarkana’s Northridge Country Club. Scharnberg went into the Kerrville Hall of Fame in 2010.

Beginning Thursday, Aug. 26, Fox Sports Texarkana’s Bob DelGiorno will be on the radio live at the Mighty Crab, located on Gibson Lane behind Target. This will be a weekly show through the football season. DelGiorno will be at Thirty Burger the following Monday, and every Monday through football. The show will start at 6 p.m.

The Fox Sports Texarkana Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at the show of their choice at 5 p.m.
