Surprise, Ariz. — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has acquired catcher Mitch Garver from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa and right-handed pitcher Ronny Henriquez.

Garver, 31, produced a .256/.358/.517/.875 slash line last season with 13 home runs and 34 RBI in 68 games.  He was on the Injured List last year from June 2-July 18 with a groin contusion suffered when he was hit with a foul tip on June 1 at Baltimore, and he was also on the IL from August 27-September 19 with low back tightness.  The only MLB catchers with a higher OPS than Garver’s .875 figure last season (minimum 225 plate appearances) were Chicago-AL’s Yasmani Grandal (.939) and San Francisco’s Buster Posey (.889).  Garver’s 13 home runs ranked tied for 9th among American League catchers last year despite being limited by injuries.

Garver owns a career .835 OPS figure, the highest in the Majors for any primary catcher with at least 1000 plate appearances from 2017-21.  He won the 2019 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award at catcher in the American League.  He set career highs in most categories in 2019, when he batted .273/.365/.630/.995 with 31 home runs and 67 RBI.  His 30 home runs as a catcher that year set a Twins club record.  The New Mexico native was selected in the ninth round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of the University of New Mexico, and he has spent his entire nine-year professional career in the Twins organization.

Kiner-Falefa batted .271 last season with 8 home runs and 53 RBI, his only full Major League season at shortstop.  He has spent his entire nine-year professional career in the Rangers organization since being drafted by the club in 2013.  Kiner-Falefa won the 2020 American League Rawlings Gold Glove Award at third base, the same year that he was selected as Rangers Player of the Year by the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Henriquez, 21, combined to go 5-7 with a 4.71 ERA (49 ER/93.2 IP) over 21 games/16 starts for Hickory (High-A) and Frisco (AA) last season, producing career highs in innings and strikeouts (105).  He was added to the 40-man roster on November 19 ahead of the reserve list deadline on November 19.  A native of the Dominican Republic, Henriquez was originally signed by the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2017.

With today’s trade, the Rangers now have 38 players on the club’s Major League roster.
