Gas prices in Texarkana went down by three cents over the past week.

According to new data from AAA Texas, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the Texarkana area dropped from $3.93 to $3.90 over the past week, tied with the Houston area for the sixth-highest in the state of Texas. Only El Paso ($3.99), Midland ($3.95), College Station-Bryan ($3.93), Odessa ($3.93), and San Angelo ($3.93) had higher prices than Texarkana.

The cheapest prices can be found in Amarillo where motorists are paying $3.56 on average.

Gas prices could see a decrease upon news that the Biden administration plans to release oil from the strategic reserves — up to 180 million barrels according to the Oil Price Information Service.

“Oil and gas prices have been subject to daily headlines – sending prices on a roller coaster,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “The latest trend has been in a downward direction for a number of reasons, including falling demand from the prior week.”

Missouri leads the nation in cheapest gas prices on average at $3.77 statewide. Kansas is second at $3.79. Oklahoma is third at $3.80. Arkansas and Maryland are tied for fourth at $3.81. Texas is sixth in the nation at $3.85.

The most expensive gas in the country is in California where drivers are paying $5.90 on average.
