DETRIOT, Mich. — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Thursday’s series opener against the Tigers in Detroit:

  • RHP José Leclerc activated from 60-day Injured List
  • LHP Kolby Allard optioned to Round Rock (AAA)
  • OF Steele Walker activated from COVID-19 Related IL and optioned to Round Rock (AAA)

Leclerc is seeking his first Major League appearance since July 26, 2020 vs. Colorado after missing the majority of the last two seasons (2020-21) due to injuries. The right-hander made 9 appearances on injury rehabilitation assignment with Round Rock (AAA) and Frisco (AA), combining to go 1-1 with a 5.00 ERA (5 ER/9.0 IP), 5 walks, and 11 strikeouts. He was scoreless in each of his last 3 outings with Round Rock (2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO), with his final outing coming last night vs. Sugar Land (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 19 pitches/13 strikes).

Most recently, Leclerc has been sidelined since the start of the 2021 season while recovering from ‘Tommy John’ surgery on his right elbow. He underwent surgery performed by Rangers Team Physician Dr. Keith Meister on March 30, 2021 after experiencing soreness during a spring training outing that year.

His last Major League appearance came on July 26, 2020 vs. Colorado. He appeared in 2 of 3 games during the Rangers’ season-opening series of the abbreviated 2020 campaign before experiencing tightness behind his right shoulder while warming up in the bullpen during the game on July 29, 2020 vs. Arizona. No surgery was required, but he spent the remainder of that season on the 45-day Injured List with a torn right teres major muscle.

In his MLB career with Texas (2016-20), Leclerc has gone 6-10 with a 3.19 ERA and 29 saves in 190 games/3 starts. He has struck out nearly one third (32.96%, 263 of 798) of batters faced in his MLB career and owns the best marks in club history for strikeouts per 9 innings (12.52) and opponent batting average (.170) among pitchers with 175+ innings pitched.

The left-hander has spent the balance of the season at Triple-A, going 0-1 with a 4.96 ERA (9 ER/16.1 IP) and 7 walks/19 strikeouts in 5 games/starts.

Walker, who was placed on the COVID-19 Related Injured List on June 11, has batted .071 (1-16) with one home run and one RBI in 5 games with Texas since his contract was selected from Round Rock (AAA) on June 5. The outfielder posted a .297/.395/.486/.881 slash line with 3 home runs and 9 RBI in 20 games with Round Rock prior to his promotion.
