MAUD, Texas — The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office says they have arrested a Maud man who willingly surrendered to authorities following the fatal shooting of his brother-in-law.
The sheriff’s office says they arrested 50-year-old Billy John Scott on charges of murder. Scott’s bond has not yet been determined.
According to the sheriff’s office, on June 21 at around 7:54 p.m., a deputy arrived on the scene in the 500 block of Birch Street in Maud with reports of a shooting.
The sheriff’s office says that the victim, 39-year-old Larry Dewayne Kirby, also of Maud, was bleeding badly and had a tourniquet placed on his leg. LifeNet EMS arrived on the scene and took over, but Kirby died from his injuries, the sheriff’s office says.
According to the sheriff’s office, the victim had been able to call 911 and report that he had been shot and identified Scott as the shooter.
The sheriff’s office says that Scott fled the scene prior to the arrival of deputies.
The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office reached Scott by telephone and made arrangements for his surrender. Scott was taken into custody without incident, the sheriff’s office says.
