The Arkansas State Police says that a capital murder charge against 37-year-old Roderick Deshawn Lewis has been filed in relation to the Perry County Jail shooting that claimed the life of a 21-year-old detention officer.

State Police say the charge was filed late Thursday against Lewis, of North Little Rock.

According to state police, Lewis was being booked into the Perry County Jail at Perryville on June 22 on drug and paraphernalia charges. Authorities say that is when Lewis is alleged to have shot detention officer Jeremiah Story, 21, of Oppelo.

State Police say the gun reportedly used by Lewis inside the Perry County Jail was one he possessed when he arrived at the jail in the custody of local sheriff’s deputies.

Story was shot at around 10:20 p.m. while he stood inside a bathroom inside the jail where Lewis was changing out of civilian clothes and into jail-issued attire, according to state police.

Story later died at a Conway hospital. Lewis is still incarcerated at the Faulkner County Jail.

The state police says their special agents from the criminal investigation division are continuing their investigation.
