The Carthage Bulldogs defeated the Pleasant Grove Hawks 45-14 in the Regional Finals at Marshall Mavericks Stadium in Marshall, Texas Friday.
The Bulldogs will play the Glen Rose Tigers in the State Semifinals next week. The Hawks season is over. Pleasant Grove finished with a record of 11-3.
Pleasant Grove had many players out with injuries including senior Corban Franklin and sophomore Lance Jackson. Jackson was injured on the first play and Franklin injured his ankle last week and didn’t play. Pleasant Grove’s best players went both ways on a steamy December night with the temperature hovering around 70 degrees. The Hawks never quit.
Hawks QB1 Ahkhari Johnson led the Hawks
Pleasant Grove had their moments. Hawks quarterback junior Ahkhari Johnson completed 7-of-18 passes for 85 yards and 1 touchdown. Johnson threw 1 interception. Johnson rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown and played offense, defense and special teams the entire game. Johnson’s touchdown pass was a 9-yard dot to senior “Big” Vic Shaw playing in his final game in a Hawk uniform.
“It didn’t go the way we wanted to on that scoreboard at all and kudos to those guys (Carthage) they’re a real good football team, Josh Gibson, Pleasant Grove Hawks head football coach said.
What did Coach Gibson tell his team after the game?
“I’m proud of this journey together.” Gibson told his team. “If we won this gold ball it would last for 6 days and we’d be wanting another one; those things don’t fill you up but, the relationships that we have here and the growth we have will last for a long time.”
